It makes me proud to have learned how to implement digital tools in my classroom. Websites, blogging, webquests and digital stories are user friendly and an easy way to broaden collaboration in the classroom between the teacher, students and their peers. This will allow an exciting new way to learn this year and I think technology will make students buy-in to the lessons. This will make them become stakeholders of their education because their attention will be kept and collaboration will deepen their understanding of the objective or lesson. Collaboration and sharing of knowledge was the key to this class because it helped me learn about technology that I didn't know about and it also gave me an editor when I needed one to provide constructive criticism. This helped improve my work and allowed me to take a step back and look at my work in another way. This was a wonderful class and I plan to use what I have learned during these 7 weeks in my classroom and also share my new found knowledge to my peers and administrators.Kerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16317455436620267575noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4598434260744030058.post-66946423870938216522011-08-15T12:19:00.000-04:002011-08-15T12:19:50.289-04:00The New School YearStarting the new school year is going to be completely different from any other year. The reason for that is all the tools that I've been introduced to in my classes from my teachers, colleagues and books. I want to start the year incorporating technology little by little. There are so many tools to use and you can't use all of them. But, I believe that technology is the key to changing learning in classrooms. Especially, in districts with low performing schools. These are some of the digital tools I would like to use in my classroom this year:

Blogs

Wikis

Podcasting

Digital Stories

Moodle

Wordle

More use of Interactive Whiteboards

This is a good start. I am going to strive to incorporate these to the best of my ability. The key is to learn as I'm going with my students and if something doesn't work out the first time not to go crazy. I like control, but I have to learn how to let go a little and let things happen organically.Kerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16317455436620267575noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4598434260744030058.post-48915946393398589152011-08-14T18:06:00.001-04:002011-08-14T18:08:59.847-04:00Creating a Digital Rich ClassroomWe read the book Creating a Digital Rich Classroom by Meg Ormiston for my Using the Internet in Education class. This book was inspirational to me because it made me want to go back to school with an open mind. It sparked a change in me and a new way of thinking to give my students the best.

My favorite is the whole entire book. It gave so many suggestions of different resources that can be used in the classroom. Resources like LibraryThing and Shelfari can take the Read and Respond to the next level. I also liked how she spells out what would be an ideal classroom in her "Meg's Technological Tools in an Ideal Classroom". She believes that if a teacher utilizes these tools (correctly) they will be able to move mountains within their class. They are as follows:

Laptop for the teacher

Laptops for every student

Interactive whiteboard

Multifunction speakers

Voice amplification system

Document camera

Student response system

Stable, wireless, robust network with limited blocking and filtering

I give this book 2 thumbs up. It is a quick read packed with substance and great ideas. I first started doing them Fall 2010 in my Intro to Ed. Tech class. I think they bring ordinary projects to life. There are different ways that you can do them like use Power Point and download into Movie Maker or use Photo Story. I have done it both ways it's whatever you like best. Here's a link that will direct you to many different ways that digital stories can be used in the classroom.
It was a little harder than what I thought, but once I found a groove I was able to get it close to done. According to Internet Expeditions website, "Bernie Dodge, a Professor of Education at San Diego State University, coined the term “WebQuest” in 1995 to describe an inquiry-based activity that involves students in using web-based resources and tools to transform their learning into meaningful understandings and real-world projects. Rather than spending substantial time using search tools, most or all of the information used by learners is found on pre-selected websites. Students can then focus on using web-based information to analyze, synthesis, and evaluate information to address high-level questions". I had never heard of these before and was a little scared of what to do. I had a bit of an issue figuring out what to do as far as a topic, but I eventually had a creative spark. There are loads of resources out there to help you if you would like to make one on your own. There also hundreds of webquests already made on any topic that you are looking for. Here are some links that can help you when you are ready: Questgarden, Zunal and Internet Expeditions.Kerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16317455436620267575noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4598434260744030058.post-32423177219100804382011-07-14T20:16:00.000-04:002011-07-14T20:16:49.113-04:00Website CreationI made it through my first website creation. I tried 3 different sites to practice. They are:

http://www.google.com

http://www.wix.com

http://www.weebly.com

Google was not that hard to do, but it was kind of plain and you had to search for things. I loved Wix because of their wonderful animations, but this site posed some issues for me. When I was trying to switch in between the slides it was beginning to drive me crazy. At one point a slide was stuck and I couldn't figure out how to fix it. I then went to Weebly and found this site much easier for beginners like myself. It was straightforward and user-friendly. There were a lot of templates and once I got the hang of how you placed graphics and text in it was kind of easy. My opinion is go with Weebly for beginners and the others when you are a little more technologically inclined. I am going to spend more time with Wix because I did love their graphics.Kerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16317455436620267575noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4598434260744030058.post-38527673648459405612011-07-08T14:59:00.000-04:002011-07-08T14:59:24.099-04:00What I Hope to LearnOn July 5, 2011 I began my Summer II course: Using the Internet in Education. I hope to add to my list of digital tools that I have acquired during my year in the Technology Education program. Our first project is to create a website and it is frustrating me a little. But, I'll figure it out!Kerihttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16317455436620267575noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4598434260744030058.post-40467660630223015932010-12-04T21:46:00.000-05:002010-12-04T21:46:15.058-05:00Final Reflection of Intro to Ed. Tech.I certainly can't believe that the semester is coming to an end. Wow! It went really fast. My reaction to beginning grad school was scary. I didn't know what to expect. I was so scared that I was having stomach problems.

Initially, as I said I was so scared, but as the semester progressed I loved it. I felt very excited to be learning new things. My feelings through the course were somewhat of a mix. I did have an issue with trying to juggle work, grad work and family life. I had to keep myself very organized by creating a pacing chart for myself and that worked lovely because I never felt overwhelmed. When projects were due I felt anxious about my grades. It has been 10 years since I've graduated college.

The most useful part of the course were the discussions and using the technologies we were learning about. This was great because it allowed hands-on learning to immerse yourself into the media. The least useful part of the course was the textbook reading. I know that this is a necessary evil, but much of the book (Integrating Technology and Digital Media in the Classroom) was very elementary. I found my mind wandering when I was reading. Thank God for the powerpoint presentations that reviewed the highlights.

I really couldn't give to many suggestions to improve the course. I think maybe that more hands on work would be good. But, I do think that it was a happy medium. I always was interested in the topics. I never thought that I could learn so much in one semester.
It is easy and free and can create a group of followers that will most likely create a discussion, all through your journaling.
